WHY SOUTH YORKSHIRE'S FUTURE IS BRIGHTER THAN EVER

Emma Panariello,
Regional Director, South Yorkshire

At a time when the national headlines are dominated by economic uncertainty, it might seem bold, perhaps even brave, to take an unashamedly optimistic stance on the future.

But across our region, something exciting is happening. Quietly but powerfully, South Yorkshire is laying the foundations of a new economic chapter driven by innovation, investment, and a renewed sense of collaboration between public and private sectors.

South Yorkshire attracted more than 1.2 billion pounds in public and private sector investment between 2022 and 2024, and major regeneration projects in Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham are already taking shape as a result.

There are many reasons to believe that South Yorkshire’s growth story is just getting started. Across the region, momentum is building in sectors such as investment, technology, manufacturing, energy, and entrepreneurship. Driving this progress are the people and organisations at the forefront of change; leaders, innovators and collaborators who are shaping the region’s future.

Having spent years working with businesses in the region, I’ve witnessed first-hand the kind of resilience and entrepreneurial energy that defines South Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire’s innovation economy is growing faster than the national average, with a 16 percent year-on-year increase in tech startups between 2022 and 2023, compared to a UK average of 12 percent.

Manufacturing continues to be a bedrock of the region’s economy, accounting for 15.3 percent of GVA, significantly higher than the national average of 9.8 percent. And now it’s being supercharged by advanced manufacturing and clean energy.

Doncaster is fast becoming a national centre for green logistics and low-carbon transport innovation, with iPort Rail and major infrastructure expansions attracting UK-wide attention.

Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre now partners with over 120 companies, including Boeing, Rolls-Royce and McLaren, reinforcing the region’s status as a world-class innovation hub.

WHERE THE FUTURE BEGINS

South Yorkshire’s story isn’t just about what’s happening today, it’s about what’s coming next. And already, the future is starting to show itself in exciting ways. In just a few years, passengers at Doncaster Sheffield Airport could be boarding flights on hydrogen-powered aircraft, with components designed and developed right here in South Yorkshire’s clean tech ecosystem.

Only last week, a 22-year-old founder from Barnsley secured their first round of funding to build AI solutions for the manufacturing sector, a small story that says a lot about where South Yorkshire is heading.

EXPERT ANALYSIS FROM CEO OF SHEFFIELD CHAMBER

Louisa Harrison-Walker OBE
CEO, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce

One of the region’s most influential voices, Louisa Harrison-Walker OBE, CEO of the Sheffield Chamber puts it best –

“This isn’t about headlines or empty promises. It’s about real potential; authentic, rooted in the region’s strengths, and steadily building pace. South Yorkshire isn’t waiting for permission to progress; the growth is already underway.

In 2024, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority approved a 110 million pound investment in skills, transport, and innovation as part of its Strategic Economic Plan, which includes funding for digital and green tech sectors.

With South Yorkshire firmly established as a world leader in advanced manufacturing, we are also poised to benefit from the increased commitment from national government in defence spending.

I look forward to sharing more stories, insights, and optimism that evidences our upward trajectory.”
